By adding clusters of gray squares and splashes of red I could speak visually to the bombed-out housing and loss of lives.

The red words in the Ukrainian language spell out our state’s motto:

LIVE FREE OR DIE

To me a most appropriate representation of what the Ukrainians are actively doing.

This painting started out as WOVEN which I painted in 2017. In 2022 the Center for the Arts decided to support the war in Ukraine by donating paintings about the war. The money raised was sent to an organization that focused on the humanitarian needs.

By converting some of the rectangle and square to yellow for the wheat fields and blue for the sky I was able to tie to the nation’s flag.
